"When I first began this amazing journey of discovery on August 15th, 2008, I could not even imagine that my lived experience with drugs and crime would become my greatest asset. I am in long-term recovery. What that means to me is that for over 12 years I have not found it necessary to use or abuse any mind altering or physically abusive chemicals. The road I journeyed in recovery guided me through many inspiring pathways. My journey started with many attempts to stop and with each attempt came an equal number of setbacks. I finally surrendered and began the painstaking task of putting my life on track. This gift of surrender would become an integral part of my life. I could now face the challenges ahead. Through surrender I learned the art of reaching out for support. August 15th, 2008, I found refuge in a homeless shelter located in LaGrange, Ga. My stay in the shelter lasted for two years. Within the first two months, I volunteered to be the cook at the shelter for a population of approximately 36 men. About three months later I became the peer support person for the veterans and the general population. My responsibilities were to escort my peers to their appointments (doctors, food stamps, and social security administration). A few months later I created and facilitated wellness activities for substance use prevention. One year later I became a staff member. The following year I enrolled in West Georgia Technical College and received my certification in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). On August 10, 2010, I decided to leave the shelter and pursue a career as an addiction counselor. I felt being an addiction counselor would allow me to help others and support my recovery. It was an amazing experience…I love learning! While studying for my addiction counselor’s certification, I learned about peer support…what a brilliant concept. I decided to pursue both credentials. Over time I pursued several other credentials. With the support of family, friends, and fellow peers I have successfully achieved certification as a CADC, CPS/FS, CPRP, SAP, CAMS, and NOTARY PUBLIC. I am the founder of PEER 2 PEER RECOVERY CONSULTANTS LLC. I worked as a contractor for GMCHN, Fellowship Deliverance Ministries, and Securing Resources for Consumers. My passion for recovery is never ending. My life is always in forward motion when it comes to recovery. My life’s experience is a testimony that with hope, surrender, and perseverance recovery is possible."
